As the NFL season gets underway, Ghana is represented across the league by players carrying Ghanaian roots onto one of the biggest stages in American sports.
Here are three players to know this season.
Thomas Incoom — Carolina Panthers
Position: Linebacker
Thomas Incoom was born in Ghana and spent the first 13 years of his life there before moving to the United States. He played college football at Central Michigan before beginning his NFL career.
Now with the Carolina Panthers, Incoom continues to proudly represent his Ghanaian heritage, including wearing the Ghanaian flag on his helmet as part of the NFL’s international player heritage initiative.
Brian Asamoah II — Atlanta Falcons
Position: Linebacker
Brian Asamoah II was born in the United States to Ghanaian parents from Kumasi.
After playing college football at Oklahoma, Asamoah entered the NFL in 2022. He is now with the Atlanta Falcons.
His connection to Ghana extends beyond his family heritage. Asamoah has participated in football development efforts in Ghana, including initiatives aimed at growing flag football in the country.
Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah — Cleveland Browns
Position: Linebacker
Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is an American-born linebacker of Ghanaian descent through his father.
The former Notre Dame standout was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft and earned his first Pro Bowl selection following the 2023 season.
Owusu-Koramoah has also publicly celebrated his Ghanaian heritage throughout his NFL career. He remains with the Browns but is currently on the reserve/PUP list as he continues his recovery from a neck injury.
Ghanaian Representation in American Football
From a player born and raised in Ghana to first-generation Ghanaian-Americans, Incoom, Asamoah and Owusu-Koramoah represent different parts of the Ghanaian diaspora’s growing presence in American sports.
